TLDR: Discussion of guns is often warped towards anecdotes and irrationality. The few good studies find that gun control has a modest but still positive impact on suicide and homicide rates.
On control affecting 'good guys' vs 'bad guys': You're right that any restriction impacts everyone subject to it. My proposal in the essay, however, isn't aimed at distinguishing 'good' from 'bad' people, but rather distinguishing between types of weapons. The argument is that broad access to firearms poses a risk to public safety and the basic sense of security foundational to civilization that outweighs their utility for individual self-defense or resisting tyranny. The proposed Utopian policy is a restriction on all firearms, including for those in government.
On suicide: I understand your sentiment probably comes from a place of trying to respect people's rights and the reality of their suffering, but I must firmly disagree with characterizing efforts to reduce suicide deaths as 'sadistic'. Reducing access to highly lethal means during acute, often transient, crises is a standard, evidence-based public health strategy that is broadly accepted as good, including by those who have survived periods of suicidal ideation (including me and several other loved ones). "This world is shit but we're not letting you out" is a straw man and I think you can do better.
There's no such thing as gun control for only the bad guys, and the government that controls your guns contains the majority of bad guys.
Gun control to prevent suicide is sadistic - this world is shit but we're not letting you out!
