Excellent breakdown on how both Waymo and Tesla massage their safety numbers. The lidar cost-benefit calc is particularly insightful - $7.5k sensor versus $6.5k expected damage savings doesn't make economic sense longterm once the tech is mature. But i agree that durng the early rollout phase when one at-fault fatality could derail entire industry adoption, paying for the extra safety margin is smart risk managment even if it's not economically optimal.
